Distance Reiki offers a gentle and supportive way to receive Reiki without needing to be in the same physical space as your practitioner. Whether you’re curious about how it works, wondering what a session feels like, or looking for a more flexible way to receive support, this guide will walk you through the essentials with warmth and clarity.
What is Distance Reiki?
Distant Reiki allows Reiki to be received without being in the same physical space.
How Does Distance Reiki Work?
Distance Reiki has been part of Reiki practice since the inception of the system.
The approach was, in fact, taught as part of the original teachings of Mikao Usui – the founder of the system of Reiki – in the early 1900s. Under Usui’s teachings, the practitioner is not “sending” Reiki but becomes one with the other person. This is the concept of interconnectedness – an awareness and acceptance that all things are part of a larger whole. Therefore, distance becomes irrelevant. There is no need to establish or create a connection because it simply is.
Intention is very important. Where attention goes, energy flows. Even quantum physics shows us that expectation creates our experience of reality and that if we change our expectations, our experience of reality shifts in response.
Energy transcends time and distance.
Why Choose Distance Reiki?
Some people prefer distance Reiki because it’s convenient. They don’t need to travel for their session.
Others simply prefer to be in their own space, making distance Reiki the best option for them.
It’s also a great option for people who are not geographically near their preferred Reiki practitioner.
Many people find that the outcomes of the Reiki feel just as supportive, whether received in-person or at a distance.
How Can Distance Reiki Help?
Just like an in-person session, distance Reiki can support a return to balance, whatever that means for the receiver. It can, for example, offer gentle support for a person navigating a stressful situation, moving through health challenges, or simply wishing to work on deeper self-inquiry.
What to Expect in a Distance Reiki Session
As with hands-on Reiki, each practitioner may tailor the session to their own approach and methods, so the experience can vary slightly from one practitioner to another.
Aside from not sharing the same physical space, a distance Reiki session generally follows much the same format as an in-person session.
A session time is arranged in advance, just as it would be for an in-person appointment. Sessions are often held by Zoom or phone, although it is also possible to share the session without a live connection.
At the beginning of the session, or beforehand if Zoom or phone is not being used, there is usually an opportunity to discuss what is happening in the client’s life and to set an intention for the session, if desired.
For first-time sessions, a new client consent form is provided to complete beforehand.
During the session, clients are invited to sit or lie comfortably. There is nothing required other than to relax and allow the process to unfold.
At the end of the session, a gentle indication is given that the session has concluded, followed by a few moments to return to full awareness. Time is then available for questions or for sharing any observations from the session.
As with an in-person session, it is best to allow around one hour in total, including time before and after the treatment for conversation and reflection.
How to Prepare for a Distance Reiki Session
Any form of Reiki – whether in-person or by distance – is an act of self-care.
The only real requirement is to set aside time and physical space where you can relax without distraction for the duration of the session. Simply wear relaxed clothing and ensure that you’re very comfortable.
The experience can be enhanced by taking a little time to create a calm space in a way that feels right for you. You might like to soften the lighting, light a candle or play gentle background music. If you enjoy working with crystals, you may wish to hold one that aligns with your intention for the session. If oracle cards are part of your practice, you might like to pull a card beforehand.
Or simply arrive as you are – that is perfectly enough. Whatever helps you feel comfortable is the right approach. There is no need to do anything special; just be open to receiving whatever is needed in that moment.
